This morning I visited the Blue Cross animal shelter in Velachery to volunteer. I'd come once before to have a look around with some of my classmates, but today was the first day we officially signed up as volunteers. Our first job was to wash the puppies. We were given a bucket of water mixed with shampoo for the puppies, and towels to scrub them with. It was really enjoyable work, and we had a lot of fun playing around with the puppies and cleaning them. After about an hour and a half, we moved on to playing with the kittens. One of them was stuck in the grill seperating their pens, so we spent time, with the help of another volunteer, bringing the kitten down. We walked about visiting some of the ill dogs, playing with them, and learning about some of the animals there. It was sad to see the number of amazing dogs that had been left behing there, or mistreated.
Cleaning the puppies was the main challenge of my visit. I love the dogs, but with so many of them in one place, you have to bear the smell, and you can't afford to be fastidious about washing them after they've rolled in their own dirt. I also don't particularly like ticks and fleas, but had to supress my aversion to them for a while. That was my biggest hindrance overcome.
In all, I really enjoyed my time with the animals at the Blue Cross and will be going back within the next few days. Next time, I could help clean the road outside, and help with the medical inventory, along with the other volunteers.
