A few of us took part in a terracota workshop today, where we learned some of the common art crafts of India; we learned how to make small clay sculptures, then pot painting and finally we all had a chance to mould our own pots on the traditional potter's wheel. The latter was definitely my favourite part. There was also an exhibition, and stalls displaying handicrafts for sale, which were amazing to look at.
We first sculpted a small Ganapathy clay model, with the help of an instructor, then we moved to the pot painting section, where an old lady taught us how to paint clay pots using natural dyes. I was amazed by the precision with which all the artisans worked; most of our clay models were lopsided or missing trunks, and our pots lacked any kind of aesthetic appeal!
